Discover the science of healthy, radiant skin with professional-grade skincare backed by medical expertise.

At San Diego Skin, we offer physician-supervised access to ZO Skin Health—a comprehensive system designed to correct, protect, and maintain the skin using proven protocols and cutting-edge ingredients.

What Is ZO® Skin Health?

Founded by world-renowned dermatologist Dr. Zein Obagi, ZO Skin Health focuses on achieving optimal skin health—not just surface-level fixes. It uses a comprehensive three-step protocol that begins by strengthening the skin barrier and progresses into advanced correction and long-term protection.

Every regimen is built on science and includes:

  • A foundational cleanse, exfoliation, and tone phase (“Getting Skin Ready”)
  • Targeted solutions for aging, pigmentation, sensitivity, or acne
  • High-performance broad-spectrum SPF to prevent damage

Each product is formulated with strengths and technologies not available over-the-counter.

Who’s an Ideal Candidate?

Anyone looking to improve skin tone, clarity, and resilience can benefit from medical-grade skincare. Ideal candidates include those with:

  • Acne-prone or oily skin
  • Dry or sensitive skin
  • Uneven pigmentation or sun damage
  • Fine lines, wrinkles, and laxity

Our ZO skincare consultations in La Jolla are designed for individuals who are committed to consistent, effective care under the guidance of a professional.

Your Skincare Consultation

Consultations are performed by our aesthetic nursing team led by Heidi Martinez, NP, under the medical direction of Dr. Mark Mofid, MD, FACS.

During your visit, we’ll assess:

  • Skin type and condition
  • History of sensitivity or allergies
  • Short- and long-term aesthetic goals

From there, we’ll design a customized skincare regimen that may include cleansers, exfoliants, serums, and retinol skincare based on your skin’s current needs and tolerance.

Your Customized Skincare Treatment Plan

Each protocol is designed around the ZO Skin Health 3-Step Approach:

Step 1: Getting Skin Ready

This foundational phase clears impurities, exfoliates, and balances the skin using a combination of cleansers, exfoliants, and toners.

Step 2: Prevent + Correct

Products like Daily Power Defense, Growth Factor Serum, and Wrinkle + Texture Repair use retinol, peptides, and antioxidant complexes to target aging, hyperpigmentation, or acne.

Step 3: Protect

Our team will help you select the right SPF product to shield against UVA, UVB, and blue light exposure—essential for maintaining progress.

In some cases, we may also recommend in-office treatments such as IPL to further support your results.

Safety & Contraindications

When starting active treatments like retinoids, it’s common to experience:

  • Mild redness or dryness
  • Temporary peeling
  • Increased sun sensitivity

We recommend starting slowly and building up usage over time. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, avoid retinoid-based products—safe alternatives will be provided.

Daily use of broad-spectrum SPF 30+, water-resistant sunscreen is essential. Look for formulas that offer physical protection and antioxidant support.

Why Choose San Diego Skin?

San Diego Skin is led by Dr. Mark Mofid, a double-board-certified plastic surgeon with over two decades of clinical experience and academic leadership. As a faculty member at Johns Hopkins and a pioneer in aesthetic medicine, Dr. Mofid sets a high standard for safety, science, and results. His approach emphasizes natural-looking outcomes, guided by data and long-term skin health, rather than trends.

Every skincare regimen is developed and overseen by our medical team, with a focus on efficacy, ingredient integrity, and patient-specific needs. Consultations aren’t rushed. We take time to assess your skin’s behavior, tolerance, and goals—then provide ongoing support as your skin evolves.

FAQs About Skincare Products

Can I use retinol if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Dermatology guidelines recommend avoiding retinoids/retinol during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We provide safe alternative regimens tailored to your needs.

Why is sunscreen required with active products?

Retinoids and other actives can increase sensitivity to sunlight. Daily SPF 30+ with water resistance helps protect skin and maintain results.

What short-term effects are normal when starting actives?

Mild redness, dryness, or peeling may occur as the skin adjusts. Our team will guide you on layering products and adjusting frequency.

How soon will I see results?

Some patients notice changes in brightness and texture within weeks, while more significant results develop after several months of consistent use.

Can in-office treatments complement my regimen?

Yes. Based on your goals, options like IPL may be added to enhance your skincare outcomes.

What should I expect in the first few weeks?

  • Weeks 2–4: Subtle changes in skin texture and clarity may begin.
  • Weeks 6–12: More visible improvements in tone, smoothness, and evenness.
  • Ongoing: Your regimen may evolve with regular check-ins.
