Platelet rich plasma (PRP) hair restoration is a non-surgical treatment that involves using PRP harvested from the patients own blood to help prevent hair loss and promote hair growth in men and women. PRP is packed with nutrients and growth factors that are essential for promoting hair growth. At San Diego Skin Medical Spa, we offer PRP hair restoration treatments in San Diego and La Jolla.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There have been several potential causes for hair loss that have been identified through decades of study. Aging is one of the most common factors, along with genetics, illness, stress, and using hair products with harsh chemicals. Nutrient imbalance has also been noted to cause hair loss, along with a plethora of noticeable symptoms.

Regardless of what leads to the loss of hair, the way in which it happens typically involves hair follicles ceasing to function as they should. For example, as patients age, their follicles start to shrink until they reach the point that they no long allow hair to grow.

What Is PRP Therapy?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy for hair loss is a three-step medical treatment in which a person’s blood is drawn, processed, and then injected into the scalp. PRP injections trigger natural hair growth and maintain it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicle and can increase the thickness of the hair shaft.

This is one of the most revolutionary methods of hair restoration. When it came to non-surgical ways to give patients back the lush locks that they once had, wigs and medications used to be the only options. Now, by simply injecting PRP into the affected areas, we can stimulate natural hair regrowth effectively.

Good Candidates for PRP Hair Restoration

PRP hair restoration is ideal for male and female patients with mild to moderate hair loss. PRP therapy is best for patients who have a positive outlook and realistic expectations. It is an ideal way to counteract pattern baldness at the early stages of thinning hair with follicles that are still partially active.

For people with severe hair loss, this method may still be recommended, but more sessions may be required to achieve visible results. If you have blood-clotting problems or a metastatic disease, you may not be recommended to undergo this treatment. Patients are encouraged to bring up all pre-existing health conditions during the consultation.

Your PRP Hair Restoration Consultation

During your PRP hair restoration consultation, a physical examination of your scalp and hair will be performed. Your medical records will be reviewed to evaluate your risk factors and determine your compatibility with the procedure. This will include any underlying conditions, current medications, and past procedures. A custom treatment plan will be developed to address your hair loss with PRP therapy.

When patients come in for the consultation, details regarding the steps involved and the expected results will be provided. They can take this opportunity to ask questions about the treatment. It helps to write a list of questions in advance so that can go into the consultation prepared.

PRP Therapy Process

PRP therapy is a three-step process. PRP therapy requires three to six treatments 4–6 weeks apart.

Maintenance treatments are required every 4–6 months.

Step 1

Your blood is drawn — typically from your arm — and put into a centrifuge (a machine that spins rapidly to separate fluids of different densities).

Step 2

After about 10 minutes in the centrifuge, your blood will have separated into in three layers:

  • platelet-poor plasma
  • platelet-rich plasma
  • red blood cells

Step 3

The platelet-rich plasma is drawn up into a syringe and then injected into areas of the scalp that need increased hair growth.

Recovery and Results

PRP hair restoration is an out-patient procedure. There is minimal downtime required following the treatment. A majority of your normal activities can be resumed the same day as your treatment. There will be some mild pain and discomfort around the scalp as well as some light swelling. Our team will provide you with some instructions for your to follow that will help you throughout the process.
