You finally scheduled your Botox appointment, had a smooth treatment, and now you’re noticing a few things. Some redness. A little swelling. Maybe a bruise is forming where the needle went in.
Before you start searching for symptoms online, take a breath. Most of what people experience after Botox is completely expected and resolves on its own within days.
That said, knowing the difference between a normal reaction and something worth a phone call to your provider matters. Here is a clear breakdown of the most common Botox side effects, what they mean, and when to pay closer attention.
1. Redness and Swelling at Injection Sites
Small red bumps or mild puffiness right after treatment are a standard response to needle punctures. Your skin is reacting to the injection, not the Botox itself. This typically fades within a few hours. Applying a cool compress to the area for short intervals helps reduce discomfort.
2. Botox Bruising
Botox bruising is one of the most frequently reported side effects of Botox, particularly in areas with more delicate vasculature, like under the eyes or around the lips.
It shows up as a small discolored patch and fades within five to ten days in most cases. Avoiding blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, and alcohol for a few days before your appointment reduces bruise risk significantly.
3. Headache
A mild headache in the hours following treatment is reported by a small percentage of patients. It usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours with over-the-counter pain relief like acetaminophen. If headaches persist beyond 48 hours or feel severe, contact your provider.
4. Temporary Drooping
Eyelid or brow drooping is rare and almost always tied to technique or product migration. When Botox spreads beyond the intended muscle, it relaxes a nearby muscle it was not meant to affect.
This is why following proper aftercare matters, specifically avoiding rubbing the treated area and staying upright for several hours post-treatment. Drooping typically resolves within two to six weeks as the product wears off in that area.
If you notice asymmetry or drooping after your treatment, your provider needs to know so they assess it accurately.
5. Asymmetry or Uneven Results
Some unevenness in the first week after treatment is normal. Botox takes time to fully settle, and the two sides of your face rarely respond at the same rate. If asymmetry remains after two weeks, a follow-up appointment for a small touch-up is usually all it takes to balance the results.
6. Flu-Like Symptoms
A small number of patients report mild fatigue or a generally “off” feeling in the day or two following treatment. This is an uncommon reaction and typically clears on its own.
Severe flu symptoms, difficulty swallowing, or muscle weakness distant from the injection site require immediate medical attention. These are extremely rare but worth knowing.
